IN THIS LESSON

We will talk about parents/guardians being partners in their child’s educational journey

A cornerstone of an inclusive classroom is transforming parents from bystanders into active partners. We acknowledge that this will not always be possible; some parents navigate extreme circumstances, face language barriers, or are hesitant to participate based on past negative experiences with schools. Despite these challenges, our goal is to consistently keep the door open.

Proactive Intake Questions to Ask Parents:

  • The Baseline: Does your child have a special need or diagnosis? (Y/N). If yes, can you share more about that?

  • The Background: Can you share a bit about your child’s journey and who they are?

  • Home Accommodations: What works best for them at home to help them learn or address behavior?

  • Identifying Triggers: Does your child have any triggers? (e.g., foods, smells, textures, sounds).

  • De-escalation: If your child is having a meltdown, what soothing techniques do you use at home?

  • Shared Goals: What are your goals for your child this school year, at home and at school?

Tools for Keeping the Door Open: For parents who are hard to reach, utilize consistent, low-pressure communication while maintaining healthy boundaries for your own work hours.

  • Positive First Contact: Parents of special needs students are often conditioned to expect bad news when the school calls. Make your first interaction a positive one. Share a "win" or something you appreciate about their child before you ever have to call about a behavioral issue.

  • Daily/Weekly Systems: Use take-home folders, shared Google Docs, or apps like ClassDojo to track progress. Utilize built-in translation features on these apps to bridge communication gaps with non-native speaking families.

  • Tech Integrations (Cloud-Based AAC Apps): Utilize shared sound/word board apps. When home and school use the same cloud-based communication tool, it ensures the child isn't forced to learn two different "languages," and parents can easily update the board with new interests from home.
