Introduction: The "Why" Behind Inclusion

Across the state, teachers are overwhelmed by large classroom sizes and a lack of resources. Couple that with having children with special needs in the classroom that you aren't sure how to work with, and it creates an overwhelming environment leading to frustration, fear, and burnout. From conversations with educators across the state, we have heard common themes of:

  • Not feeling supported.

  • Being scared to do the wrong thing and get in trouble.

  • Flat out not knowing what to do.

The educational landscape is changing, and these changes are causing a lot of educators to feel tired. Our goal is to address these issues head-on. From our conversations with parents of special needs children, Gen Ed Teachers, SPED Teachers, and various professionals, our interviews highlighted several recurring themes that this workshop is designed to address:

  • The Communication Gap: The need for proactive communication systems between home and school.

  • Misunderstood Behaviors: A lack of training around what triggers a child, leading to unwarranted consequences.

  • The Power of Tailored Support: The stark positive contrast when families have access to specialized educators and sensory tools.

  • Simple Actions Yield Big Results: How small interventions (like one-on-one communication and safe spaces) can transform a classroom.

You don't have to be a diagnostic expert; you just have to have a willingness to learn. Our goal is to give you tools to use in the classroom that will not only help students with special needs have the best educational experience possible, but allow everyone in the room to thrive.
